The virgin cure book5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() As I read, I desperately wanted to believe Moth's world didn't exist. The Virgin Cure is the kind of historical fiction that shakes readers to their cores. While the cover of this novel seems relatively innocuous, its title references something deeply sinister, and the book itself is filled with a sad story. With this balance, McKay manages to have a pure narrative from a young girl and provides the reader with context about the world in which Moth lives. Sadie, a female physician who works with poor women and children. My thoughts: Although Moth narrates her story, the reader is treated to helpful and explanatory notes in the text from Dr. Moth's father left when she was three, and her mother, a gypsy, lives in poverty so deep on Chrystie Street, she sells Moth as a servant to a rich woman. ![]() The basics: The Virgin Cure is the story of Moth, a 12-year-old girl in New York City in 1871. The backstory: I've been eager to read The Virgin Cure, Ami McKay's second novel, since Amy at Amy Reads reviewed it last fall when it was released in Canada. ![]()

A killer vacation book5/22/2023 ![]() I did like how the showdown happened in a somewhat protected way, although poor Harry did end up getting choked on a little. I couldn't quite get invested enough in the guests' lives to even venture an intelligent guess for the killer, so I just read and went along with the story. I will give Harry credit for trying to do his job with the article he was writing, but sometimes he didn't go about it in the smartest way. Some of the story really dragged on for me without accomplishing much, i.e., looking for clues in cozies usually at least turns up something, but it sure seemed like they weren't finding a whole lot in this one, even after a couple of murders and a possible murder attempt or two. Nick Burns when it comes to Kelly dating someone ) I hope they'll be better friends, but I'm still team Det. I know he meant well and at times, he reminded me of Sheldon with his intelligence yet sometimes innocent or naive actions. ![]() Kelly's dad Ben is such a hoot! I did think Kelly could have been a little nicer to Harry, but honestly he'd have tried my patience too with his antics. I know Aunt Ruth wasn't in it much, but I liked her so much right away and kind of wish she wasn't retiring to Arizona. I really liked this first in a new series, because for one thing, I love Myrtle Beach and haven't been back there in forever. ![]()

Gogol the namesake5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() Eliciting more than fifty enthusiastic comments, this small cyber-event reveals a community’s self-consciousness and indignation about the powerful marketing initiatives and strategies of commodification employed in the service of selling South Asian culture to Western consumers.Īnd yet, the frustrations that inspired “Anatomy of a Genre” and elicited such fervent commentary seem to contradict another instance of everyday readership that I encountered during an interview for a broader interdisciplinary study on the uses of transnational South Asian fiction within a South Asian American reading group. “Anatomy of a Genre” parodies the features that drive the publication of transnational South Asian literature, such as book covers, reviewership, and exoticising marketing strategies. ![]() Reprinted with permission from Manish Vij. ![]()

Pinhead vs. Marshal Law by Pat Mills5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() In 2000, Mills and O'Neill took the character to the Cool Beans World website. Over the next few years Marshal Law appeared in various Intercompany crossovers with other characters, including the Savage Dragon and the Mask. ![]() That year also saw the character return to Epic Comics for a two-issue series pitting the Marshal against Clive Barker's Pinhead character. Mills and O'Neill then took Marshal Law to Dark Horse Comics, where the story in Toxic! was completed in late 1992. Toxic! proved to be short-lived and Apocalypse Comics went bankrupt in 1992. The character then starred in the lead feature of Toxic!, a weekly comic started in 1991. In 1991, Mills and O'Neill took the character to the fledgling Apocalypse Comics for another one-shot. It was followed by the Marshal Law Takes Manhattan one-shot, in which most of Marvel Comics' major characters were parodied. Epic Comics launched Marshal Law in October 1987 as a six-issue limited series. ![]()
